Emei Qigong exercises are a method of self-managing health care that has been practiced since 1227 A.D. in China. . The exercises use our breath and the focusing of our mind, while doing simple body movements. These exercises are instrumental in the prevention and treatment of disease, the relaxing and focusing of the mind, and in holding back the process of aging. From ancient times, Emei Qigong has been known as a natural quality of life system for eliminating suffering and prolonging life.

For those who are ill the results of practicing will be remarkable, but there is a saying in Emei Qigong, “Treat the disease before it becomes disease.”  Practicing for health strengthening and illness prevention will be the greatest gift you ever give to yourself.

Types of exercises

The many exercises in the Emei Qigong system are divided into micro-training and macro-training. Those students who study the system will learn many of the exercises and their applications. Micro- training consists of the Sacred Healing Sounds, Meditation and the Micro-Cosmic Orbit.
In macro-training there are: the twelve original forms (Heaven and Earth, Zhi and Heart, Dragon and Crane, Wind and Cloud, Big and Small, Dark and Light), Deep Pounding Breath (4 levels including opening the middle dantian and lao gong point in the palm), Eighteen movement form, Emei Taiji (Tai Chi), and Wuji Gong.

Emei Qigong exercises cultivate the important connection of mind and body with the abundant energy of nature. Its movements, mental focus, and breath control stimulate the internal Qi flow within our body and the external energy flow outside our body (our aura).

The fundamentals

These exercises involve three specific modes of action:

To breathe fully, slowly and evenly -- breath is life. We must inhale fully to take in the energy-powered oxygen, and exhale fully to release the toxic carbon dioxide.

To maintain a mental calmness -- focusing leads your internal Qi and your Qi leads your internal strength. The ability to control your focus will lead you to a peaceful and focused state.

To move and align your body so your Qi and blood flow are enhance and uninhibited.

The most common exercise

The most common exercise for the general public in Emei Qigong is called "Wuji Gong." It is a simple form that separates the body into three parts:

The upper portion of our body corresponds to the energy of Yang, or heavenly energy;

The lower portion of our body corresponds to the energy of Yin, or earthly energy; and

The middle portion of our body is the connection of Yin and Yang, or the balance of the body.

The "Wuji Gong" exercise utilizes the bountiful energy that surrounds us to cultivate, balance and cleanse one's internal Qi. It is common to feel euphoric after doing this exercise as endorphins are stimulated and brain waves turn to an alpha state which represents a relaxed manner.

A relaxing breathing technique

Concentration upon the lower "dantian" (area below naval where Qi is stored) is very conducive to relaxing the whole body, as it helps enhance the circulation of blood throughout the body; it also makes abdominal breathing a little easier and naturally shifts the body's center to a lower position, making the body's equilibrium more stable. Thus, if it is difficult for you to breathe abdominally, it is more important to focus upon the lower "dantian," as the act of doing so will enable you to gradually shift from thoracic to abdominal breathing. In any case, the breathing should always be slow, even and natural, as any irregularity of the breath will disrupt the natural flow of Qi.
