Stress
"On a mental level, one should remain calm and avoid excessive desires
and fantasies, recognizing and maintaining the natural purity and
clarity of the mind. When internal energies are able to circulate
smoothly and freely, and the energy of the mind is not scattered but
focused; illness and disease can be avoided."
--The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine "Boy am I stressed out!" If you recognize this statement, then what you
are feeling is what millions of people feel each day. It can attack at
work, with family or friends, in the car (road rage), or in any aspect
of daily life. Stress is an over reaction of emotions and thoughts during the stimuli of daily life. It is an ailment of the mind, which can manifest itself physically. The mind and the body have a partnership in which they interact. It is a cause-and-effect relationship. According to Dr. Julian Whitaker, author of "Health and Healing," the common physical complaints of stress can include: upset stomach, diarrhea and constipation; fatigue or exhaustion; shortness of breath, even when resting; tightness in the head, neck or chest aches and pains which plague one with worry "I believe that stress is the most common cause of ill health in modern society," Dr. Whitaker explained, "and probably underlies as many as 70% of all visits to the family doctor." So, when we talk about healing stress, we must also talk about healing the mind. Focusing is to the mind as a cursor is to a computer. It leads the mind to think and react emotionally on the subject you are focused upon. For example, viewing a movie: all thoughts and emotions are reactions to the film. Daily life outside the movie is forgotten. Even after the film is over, you may continue to be emotionally absorbed with an element from the film for a short time. Reading books, playing sports, and attending a concert can all be considered great short term escapes from daily stress. Alcohol and drugs are chemically-induced escapes. The chemicals alter our reactions of thoughts and emotions on life. Although they may produce a short-term sense of well being, alcohol and drugs cause devastating side effects. The best way to escape the clutches of stress, is to control the focus of thought and emotion naturally, so one can logically and peacefully deal with a stressful situation. Scientists have discovered at least five different brain waves that can be measured: Delta - a deep sleep
Theta - a light sleep Alpha - a calm, waking state Beta - an active or stressful state Gamma - a fighting state In an alpha state, the creative and logical aspects of consciousness work at their best. In this state, you can peacefully resolve stressful problems. Emei Qigong can lead one into an alpha state through its exercises and meditation. The most common exercise is a simple form of utilizing the bountiful energy which surrounds us, in order to cultivate, balance and cleanse our internal energy. While doing the exercise, endorphins are stimulated in the brain which yields a feeling of well being and pain relief. As the mind calms itself, a feeling of peace and happiness takes over the senses. It is 100 percent natural and there are no negative side effects. Like everything in life, it takes practice, but the exercises and techniques are simple and easy to execute. Stress is more common than the common cold. It is more difficult to understand and to cure, but for our own health and well being, we must try to relieve it. Immediate stress reducing technique: Slow down your breathing by taking fuller breaths and focusing on the area below the navel (called the Dantian, the main storehouse of energy). This produces a bioelectric activity in the lower abdomen that spreads to the surrounding small blood vessels, causing them to dilate, which reduces blood pressure and eases energy flow. The combination will lead the mind to the calming alpha state. If you would like to schedule an event in your area or setup a personal healing session contact Teacher David Knoll. |
